More than one in four Danes travel on holiday without insurance

The summer holiday season is in full swing, and for many that also means a trip abroad. But many people go on holiday without being covered by travel insurance.

For many, the summer holiday is well underway.

The trip was booked long ago, the suitcases are packed, and the passport is ready in the pocket.

But a survey from Kantar Gallup shows that more than a quarter of Danes do not have travel insurance when they go on holiday.

And that risks becoming both an expensive and troublesome affair if an accident happens.

That is according to Anne Garde Slothuus, insurance expert at Forsikringsoplysningen.

"There is no help to be had. So you are left to figure out how to get home in the safest way and cover the costs yourself," she says.

Forsikringsoplysningen is run by the industry association for insurance and pension companies. Anne Garde Slothuus' job as an insurance expert is to provide impartial and objective guidance on insurance.

Depending on which travel insurance you have, it can cover lost luggage, assistance in case of illness, and help with other things related to travel.

An economic question

----------------------

Those who are most risk-tolerant, or who at least have not taken out travel insurance, are the young.

According to the survey, one in three people aged 18-29 travel on holiday without insurance.

My colleague Helene Rønbjerg Kristensen stopped by Copenhagen Airport this morning to talk to travelers about their travel insurance – or lack thereof.

Several had arranged travel insurance, others needed a couple of minutes to think about it, and some had no travel insurance at all.

Why do you think young people choose not to get travel insurance?

"I think there is a feeling that you don't have as much to spare, and so you choose to skip it," said Elias Witt Aadahl, who was on his way to Croatia without travel insurance.

In the clip, Elias Witt Aadahl elaborates on why he thinks some young people choose not to buy travel insurance.

But you should be careful about that. Because you risk having to spend much more money than the insurance itself costs if an accident happens, according to Anne Garde Slothuus.

"Right now, it of course costs some money. But if you look at what you could potentially be facing if things go wrong, it's far more money," she says.

Her advice is to check your insurance and look into which coverages are necessary for your trip.

"Travel insurance comes in different price ranges, so you can look into what the cheapest option is and whether it covers the need I have. Then maybe that's the one you should make sure to have," elaborates Anne Garde Slothuus.
