Eurovision organizer now imposes stricter requirements on host countries

By Emma Klitnæs ( [email protected] )
The Eurovision organizer, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), is now introducing a number of changes to the competition rules ahead of next year's song contest in Bulgaria.
According to the EBU, the changes come after feedback from TV stations, including DR, which participated in Eurovision in Vienna this year. The goal is to create clearer rules, strengthen artist safety and protection, and protect the integrity of the competition, it states.
- These changes are about providing greater clarity for everyone involved, protecting the artists, and ensuring that the competition continues to create a safe and welcoming environment, while preserving the spirit and integrity that makes Eurovision so special, explains Eurovision Director Martin Green in the press release according to Ritzau.
The changes mean that all artists from 2027 must be 18 years old on the date of their first rehearsal. Previously, the age limit was 16. This is to protect young artists and reduce the pressure surrounding the competition.
At the same time, the rules regarding pre-recorded audio are clarified. The lead singer must perform the song live, while backing tracks and other pre-recorded elements may be used as long as they do not replace or unduly enhance the live singing.
Additionally, the rules for hosting are also changed. In the future, the winning TV station will "automatically be ineligible to host the competition if an armed conflict, a sensitive geopolitical situation, or any other situation significantly affects the safety, security, or stability of their state."
If necessary, the EBU can order an independent security assessment. This is stated by the EBU according to Ritzau in a press release.
If the winning country is unsuitable to hold the competition, the EBU will appoint an alternative host, as for example in 2023, when Eurovision was held in the British city of Liverpool and produced by the British media BBC on behalf of Ukraine.

Small drop in US inflation
In the USA, US consumer prices rose by 3.4 percent in July compared to the same month last year. Thus, inflation has eased slightly from June, when it was at 3.5 percent. This is reported by Ritzau.
Economists had predicted this would happen.
- Although inflation has eased over the past two months, it remains on the high side because energy prices have risen markedly following the war in Iran, says Kristian Skriver, head of macroeconomics at the Danish Chamber of Commerce, in a written comment to Ritzau.
Fuel prices in the USA have risen by 24.6 percent over the past year, Kristian Skriver notes.

Tar company may no longer discharge environmentally hazardous substances into Nyborg Fjord
The tar company Koppers in Nyborg must stop discharging environmentally hazardous substances into the sea.
This has been decided by the Environmental and Food Board of Appeal following a complaint from, among others, the Danish Society for Nature Conservation.
The board assesses, among other things, that the use of mixing zones – zones where pollution within a certain distance from the discharge pipe may exceed limit values – has been too lenient, and that there has been insufficient documentation that the aquatic environment is not being burdened by environmentally hazardous substances.
Lars Midtiby, CEO of the Danish Society for Nature Conservation, is pleased with the decision.
- This is an example of the Environmental Protection Agency interpreting the rules incorrectly, and there have been several of those recently. So we need the Environmental Protection Agency to review its practices and tighten up.
It has not been possible to get a comment from either Koppers or the Environmental Protection Agency.

Firefighters accuse Israel of deliberately starting forest fires in Lebanon
By Emma Klitnæs ( [email protected] )
Firefighters, residents, and environmental groups in southern Lebanon are now accusing Israel's military of starting forest fires. This is reported by the British newspaper The Guardian ( https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/aug/12/israel-deliberately-starting-wildfires-in-southern-lebanon-firefighters-say ).
The newspaper writes that olive groves, agricultural land, and forest areas have been hit by fires started by, among other things, drones and flares.
It is especially since the ceasefire on June 17 was agreed that there has been a pattern of fires, it is stated. The agreement was made between the USA and Iran and also included Lebanon, although fighting has continued since then.
Nevertheless, most of the civil defense's efforts in the Nabatieh region in southern Lebanon are related to fires, says leader Hussein Fakih.
- There are huge forest areas that have burned. I don't have the exact numbers, but in the areas close to the front line, about 30-40 percent of the land has been affected by fires, Hussein Fakih tells The Guardian.
Israel's military has not responded to The Guardian's inquiry regarding the respective fires. Previously, however, the Israeli military has said that forest areas are used by Hezbollah to hide.

Court rejects Marius Borg Høiby's appeal of remand custody
By Emma Klitnæs ( [email protected] )
A Norwegian appeals court has today rejected Marius Borg Høiby's appeal against continuing to be remanded in custody with an electronic ankle monitor.
This is reported by the Norwegian media NRK.
Høiby, who is the son of the Norwegian Crown Princess, Mette-Marit, wanted to be released with a reverse electronic ankle monitor that only prevents him from moving in certain areas, but the Oslo District Court assessed on Monday that there was still a risk of new offenses and therefore extended his remand custody ( https://www.dr.dk/nyheder/seneste/marius-borg-hoeiby-faar-forlaenget-sin-varetaegtsfaengsling ).
It was this decision that Høiby appealed, and that appeal has subsequently been rejected today. He must therefore continue to be remanded in custody at Skaugum with an electronic ankle monitor.
On June 15, Høiby received a four-year prison sentence for, among other things, two rapes. Parts of the verdict have been appealed, which is why he is currently in remand custody.
Marius Borg Høiby has already been in remand custody with an electronic ankle monitor for the past four weeks.

Museum prepares to move into old fish factory
Bornholm's Museum has now officially taken over its future home, an old fish filleting factory in Nexø.
The work to create a new cultural history museum for Bornholm has been ongoing for a long time, but now the work in the building itself can begin.
- It is a very special feeling that we can now properly take the building into use. We have been looking forward to reaching this point, says museum director Jacob Bjerring-Hansen.
The museum gives Bornholmers the opportunity to follow how the former industrial building gradually becomes a museum, so there will be an open house already on September 4.
Bornholm's Museum is working together with Moesgaard Museum in Aarhus on the development of the new exhibitions.
The museum in Nexø is expected to open in 2028.
