A 3,000-year-old bronze axe has been handed in at Holstebro Museum, but the staff do not know who found it or where it came from. The museum is now asking the anonymous donor to come forward.

The axe will likely be declared treasure trove (danefæ), but the museum staff know neither where it was found nor by whom.

Holstebro Museum is looking for the person who, on Thursday 8 October, handed in a 3,000-year-old bronze axe.

The staff did not get the man’s name or phone number when he anonymously delivered the axe, says museum inspector and archaeologist Astrid Toftdal Jensen.

“I am very sorry about that, because right now the only thing we have is the axe itself. And we cannot tell any story about it, and we cannot tell where it was found or when or by whom,” she says.

The axe is very rare, and the National Museum will declare it treasure trove.

The 3,000-year-old weapon could help provide new knowledge about the Bronze Age in West Jutland.

- We would very much like to know where it comes from

“Does it come from a place we already know? That is, are there any other finds from the same location that can tell us more about the area, or is it from a completely new place that we have no prior knowledge of and that suddenly makes it very interesting?” she asks.

Astrid Toftdal Jensen promises that the donor can remain anonymous if he wishes. She just really wants to hear from the person.

“Or perhaps someone who knows about it. Someone who can help us a little further in our search for its history,” she says.

Holstebro Museum only knows of ten other axes of the same type in Northern Europe.
