Esbjerg Municipality has taken a new step on the path to becoming better at handling people with dementia.

19 social and healthcare assistants are, as the first in Esbjerg Municipality, now finished with a specialized education in dementia.

- They have acquired tools, insight, and an approach to people with dementia in a very special way. That is what Lene Fabricius, head of competence development in Esbjerg Municipality, says.

The education is part of Esbjerg Municipality's effort to develop employees' competencies. And the 19 employees have already put the new knowledge to use. The intention is therefore that more people should receive specialized training in handling dementia.

- No specific number has been decided, but I think we are looking at a number of years where employees will be trained. We need to strengthen the quality of the municipality's work with people with dementia, says Lene Fabricius.

The specialized dementia education lasts 10 months and takes place alongside daily work.
